Longyard Junior Open Day – May 3rd, 2015
We had a good field of 39 starters for the annual Junior Open Day at Longyard Golf Course in Tamworth. The host club was represented along with players from Armidale, Coonabarabran, Inverell, Moree, Narrabri, Tamworth, Uralla, Walcha and Warialda Golf Clubs. Playing to your handicap on this course is always a tough ask.
The local PGA Professional at Longyard, Steven Myers, is developing a great stable of (very) young golfers and 10 players participated in the 4-hole Tyro event. It is important that this group of players are encouraged from seeing other young people from other clubs and some long-term friendships are established along the way.
The Junior Boys event was contested by 13 players from across the region. In a repeat of the 2014 outcome, Andrew Brennan (Walcha) held off Darcy Carroll (Moree) by 1 shot to win the gross event. Andrew is now playing off scratch and his results in the NIOOM and various other JNJG events are starting to be noticed. Zac Kelly (Coonabarabran) won the Junior Boys nett event with a great score of 73. Zac has now shot up to third in the NIOOM competition and he is playing very consistently this year.
The scoring in the Junior Girls event was not sensational but the winner of the Gross event was Breanna Purse (Moree). Zoe Tomlinson (Narrabri) won he Junior Girls nett event with a good score of 77.
The 9 Hole Cadet boys event was tightly contested with both Luke Devney (Moree) and Jayden Selmes (Coonabarabran) shooting 60. Brendan Scott (Tamworth) filled out the minor placings. Jayden has snuck ahead in the Cadet Boys NIOOM competition and he may be hard to chase down from here.
The 9 Hole Cadet girls event saw the consistent Annabelle Abrahamson (Moree) take out the major prize with a great score of 55. Annabelle’s score was too good for Nicola Ross (Longyard) and Courtney Dade (Uralla).
The next event on the Northern Inland Order of Merit series is the re-scheduled event at Bundarra Golf Club on Sunday June 21st. This is a DOUBLE POINTS Order of Merit event so don’t forget to bring the heavy putter for the sand greens. We look forward to seeing you there.
