The Competition is Starting to get Interesting in the Northern Inland - August 23rd, 2015
An overcast and cool morning greeted the enthusiastic junior golfers at Uralla Golf Club for this year’s classic. A welcoming cuppa and cakes and slices were enjoyed by the golfers and their parents before the hit-off. Hospitality at Uralla is always a high priority.
The Cadet (9 hole) Order of Merit competition is starting to get exciting. For the second event running, Annabelle Abrahamsen (Moree) was able to beat all the boys with a great score of 44. It was a good field in the girls event with Dade Courtney (Uralla) leading the host club competitors and Mia Clark (Uralla) also having a good score. In the boys event, a great round of 45 shots from Garth Walls (Guyra) was good enough to hold off Noah Weir (Longyard) by a few shots with Harry Milford (Coonabarabran) finishing in third place. Garth’s score was good enough to take him up into second place in the OOM with a small six-point range covering the first five players in the competition.
We had a good field of 12 players in the (4 hole) Tyro competition with players from the host club as well as Moree, Longyard and Glen Innes enjoying the game. Cooper Smith (Uralla) and Cheye Dodd (Uralla) had the fewest swings.
The junior events were again contested on the challenging course with fast greens and little run. Andrew Brennan (Walcha) was again in top form and a score of 74 was good enough for him to take home the major prize. Jock McPherson (Tamworth) also played well with a score of 77. The junior boys nett division was a tight affair with Taylor Brennan (Guyra) having a great score of 66. Taylor’s score was closely followed by Jack Carey (Tamworth) with a 69 and Toby Cooper (Armidale) a further shot behind. The junior girls division unfortunately only had one starter but Zoe Tomlinson (Narrabri) played consistent golf to finish with a nett 72.
The next event in the Northern Inland Order of Merit Series will be held at Inverell on Sunday September 13th. We look forward to seeing you there.
