US Golf Trip for Port Macquarie Junior
JNJG Junior and Port Macquarie Golf Club member Oli Payne took off to America recently to compete in a number of junior golfing events. He had an amazing trip and learnt a great deal. He was appreciative of all the support he has received and wrote this report for us from his trip:
Thank you for your support and sponsorship for my trip to the IMG Junior World Golf Championship.
I had an amazing experience and I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to represent Australia and Port Macquarie Golf Club at such an event.
The first event I played was a qualifying putting competition, which saw me get through to the World Putting tournament; I was lucky enough to win this event in a play-off.
The second event I played was the Futures Championship held at Sycuan Golf Course in San Diego. It was so interesting playing with people from all over the world, there were 52 countries represented at this event. I was happy with how I played on the first day, but struggled on the second day.
After this event Dad and I played Torrey Pines in La Jolla, which is where the 2021 US Open will be played. We both had solid rounds and enjoyed the course immensely; it was a long and interesting course. Our playing partners were members from a private course called the Farms in Rancho Santa Fe. They invited us to play with them the following Saturday, it was a great experience.
We then travelled down to Morgan Run Golf Course, which is where the main event was being held, the IMG Junior World Championship. There were 50 countries represented. I met some really great guys from England, Columbia and Connecticut; we have continued to stay in touch. These boys were continuing on to play other events for the rest of the month.
The course was in very good condition, we played from the back tees, which made it a very long course. My scores were 75, 75 and 71 (Par 71). I was happy with my performance and how I managed my nerves while playing at this level. I came T51/162 competitors, and was pleased with this result for my first overseas tournament.
Our final tournament was a Junior and Parent ambrose played at Westin Mission Hills in Palm Springs, we had 6 under and came third. It was a great way to end our US trip.
