Tamworth Junior Open Day
A good field of 40+ turned up from Coonabarabran, Gunnedah, Moree, Tenterfield, Armidale, Guyra, Longyard, and the host club at Tamworth for the conduct the Junior Open Day. This was the first time the Tamworth event had been included in the NIOOM series and it was good to see such a wide range of clubs represented.
In the Junior Boys section, local “gun” Tom Gill (Tamworth) had a great round of 71 (1 over par). A visitor from the Denman Golf Club, Khan Gallagher also had a great day with a score of 73. Another local boy from Tamworth, Sam Gray, had a fantastic day out to win the Boys Nett section with a score of 61. Tom Gill, Zac Kelly (C’bran) and Bailey Milford (C’bran) also played equal to or better than their handicap.
In the Junior Girls section, we were pleased to see a competitive field of five girls take on the course. Again, course knowledge played a significant role with Emily Roworth (Tamworth) taking out the girls gross division. Emily’s score was 1 better than Breanna Purse (Moree). Zoe Curran (Tamworth) was also close behind. Both Emily and Zoe played to their handicap with nett scores of 72 closely followed by Matilda Chapman (C’bran) with a nett 73.
A good field of 14 boys and girls competed in the 9 hole Cadet division with Taylor Brennan (Guyra) shooting the day’s best score of 52 shots. Taylor held off Lachlan Fleming (Tamworth) by 1 shot with Alex Fogarty (Tamworth) also having a good day out. The Cadet Girls section was another close tussle with Annabelle Abrahamson’s (Moree) 54 beating Tori Brazier (Guyra) by two shots.
In the 5 hole event for REALLY young golfers, we saw a good roll-up of 10 players. Hopefully, these little ones will stay interested in the game and join us again in the 2015 Northern Inland Order of Merit series.
