2014 Mullumbimby Junior Open
Over 50 players from Ballina, Casino, Coolangatta-Tweed Heads, Lismore, Murwillumbah, Yamba, Iluka, Ocean Shores, Kyogle and Byron Bay converged on Mullumbimby Golf Course for the second to last event in the 2014 NRDGA Order of Merit series. Always a friendly and non-confronting place to come to, Mullumbimby excelled in the level of hospitality afforded to the players and parents.
What a day it turned out to be. Ashlee Selwood had a hole-in-one on the 12th, Emily Poynton had the (so far) best round of her career to finish with a nett score of 60 (10 under handicap) and Riley Taylor had a par 70 to win the Boys Junior event for the second time in 3 years.
The Cadet boys OOM series is turning out to be a real cliffhanger between Nicholas Sneesby (Murwillumbah) and Isaac Outridge (CTH). Isaac managed to get the upper hand at Mullum with a great score of 42, just beating off his mate Chad Broadbeck (CTH) on a countback. Isaac now trails Nicholas by only 3 OOM points leading into the last event of the series. The quality of the Cadet golf is definitely improving with over half the field finishing with less than 50 shots for the 9 holes. The Cadet Boys nett event was won by one of our more recent participants, Connor Whitelock from Byron Bay. Connor had a great nett score of 26 and was followed closely by Reilly Wunderlich (Yamba) and Chad Broadbeck (CTH) both with nett 27.
The Cadet girls event was a 3 way affair between Emily Martin and Grace Matthews from Murwillumbah and Jenna Carter from Yamba. On this occasion, Emily must have hit the ball straighter and longer and took out the gross event with 55 shots.
The Junior Boys event was also a tight affair with Riley Taylor (Casino) finishing with a great round of par 70. Riley was closely followed home by Jay Mackenzie (Ballina) with 72 and Alex Hunt (Murwillumbah) with a 73. The Junior Boys nett event was won by Ethan Mitchell (Murwillumbah) with a great score of 66 followed by a pair of 68’s by Callen Stubbs (CTH) and Josh Williams (Murwillumbah).
The Junior girls nett event, apart from Emily Poynton’s score of 60, was also a tight affair. Ashlee Selwood’s ace was included in a nett 71 followed by Maddy Trew (Murwillumbah) with a nett 72.
A lot of effort goes into organising these events and our thanks go to the members of Mullumbimby Golf Club for their valued time.
The next event in the NRDGA Order of Merit circuit is at Byron Bay on Sunday November 9th. As this is the last event on the 2014 OOM series, we will present the Order of Merit prizes at this event. It is usually a fun day so we hope you are all able to attend.
