Coolangatta-Tweed Heads Junior Open
The biggest field for our 2016 Junior Order of Merit season assembled for the Coolangatta-Tweed Heads Junior event last Sunday. In an almost “back to the good old days” feeling, approximately 130 competitors turned up for the big day. Participants from 35 different golf clubs made the day a cosmopolitan event. Andrew Outridge and his helpers at the club deserve a big vote of thanks for managing the many different facets of a big day like this.
The Junior Boys Open Division is always hotly contested with almost half the field being single figure handicappers. Previous winners of this trophy include Adam Scott, Jason Day, Steven Bowditch and Andrew Dodt. However, only one boy had ever won the competition twice – and he repeated again for his third win on Sunday. Jay Mackenzie (Ballina) shot an even par round of 72 on the River Course to win by 1 shot from Peter Baldry (CTH) and Frantisek Pavek (Sanctuary Cove). Isaac Callaway (Royal Pines Resort) took out the Division B gross prize and Justin Hammett (Emerald Lakes) took out the Division C gross. Good Nett scores were recorded by Tommy Lee (Sanctuary Cove), Jayden Situ (Emerald Lakes) and the best nett score of the day (64) was recorded by Suny Russell (Surfers Paradise).
The Junior Girls Open Division attracted a good field of 17 ladies. A great round of 73 by Alice Kweon (Sanctuary Cove) was good enough to win the gross prize. Ka Yeon Park (Sanctuary Cove) and Karen Kim (Royal Pines Resort) also had good rounds. The Junior Girls Nett Division was won by Kayeon Nam (Sanctuary Cove).
A strong field of 25 boys and 5 girls played in the 9 hole Tyro competition. The Boys Gross competition was won by Sam Adams (CTH) with a fantastic score of 40 shots. Sam has now caught his brother Ben in the OOM scores so the final event at Byron Bay should be an exciting shoot-out for the Adams family. Billy Muldoon (CTH) also had a great round to finish only 1 shot behind Sam. The Boys Nett winner was William Spedding (CTH) with a great score of 24. We suspect that the handicapper will be catching up with you soon William. Kane Whitelock (Byron Bay) also played really well for a nett 27.
The Tyro Girls Division was won by Elly Petersen (CTH) with a fantastic score of 42. Elly’s great score was followed home by Hollie Fuller (Grafton) with 44. Hollie took home the Best Nett prize.
The final event for the year is scheduled for Byron Bay Golf Club on Sunday October 30th. The final OOM prizes will be awarded on that day along with he “Gold Coast Holiday” raffle draw. However, you must be PRESENT on the day to win the holiday so make sure you are here to join in the festivities.
