Competitive matches to start Far South Coast Encourage Shield
The Far South Coast Encourage Shield competition got underway on Sunday the 31st of January at the Catalina Country Club. Moruya took on Mollymook in a match that went down to the second last hole with the last match to decide the winning team.
Mollymook got the first runs on the board when Jye Halls Defeated Ryan Clugston 7&6 in a one sided affair. The next match to finish went in favor of Moruya when Steven Mercer defeated Dillon Granger 6&4, this match squared the ledger 1 game each. The next match to finish was Riley Norman from Moruya who defeated Jayden Granger in his first ever competition with a 4&2 victory, well done Riley. Then we witnessed Mollymook square the match when Lachlan Barr defeated a very game Alec Sinclair who was also having his first game of Pennants, this match was very up and down as after 3 holes Alec was 3up before Lachlan fought back and eventually won the match 4&2. This meant that the match would come down to the last pairing, where Kelsey Bennett and Lachlan Ingram were having a battle, Kelsey birdied three holes in a row early on the back nine to square the match with only 4 holes to play.
Some very accurate and long driving from Lachlan eventually sore him victorious over a very game and vastly improved Kelsey Bennett. It was a very gritty performance from Lachlan who was in some pain throughout his round, this eventually sore a visit to the hospital on his way home to Moruya.
It was fantastic to see all 12 competitors and their caddies walking down the 17th hole at Catalina and creating a brilliant atmosphere.
We look forward to seeing the results from this weekend when Catalina take on Moruya at Narooma Golf Club. Unfortunately we have to wait one more week to see how Bega will kick of their 2016 campaign after winning the State Final in Newcastle only a couple of weeks ago. Lets see if they can go back to back.
