Moree Junior Open Golf Day - Sunday February 28th, 2016
The second event on the Northern Inland Order of Merit Series got underway with a smaller than expected field. Players from Armidale, Tamworth, Narrabri, Walcha, Warialda, Coonabarabran, Inverell, Goondiwindi and the host club participated. The skies were clear and the golf was exciting so the majority of players would have ended the day with some good and bad “luck” stories.
The Junior Boys event attracted a strong field with 5 of the players off single figure handicaps. The final wash-up was a great result for the defending champion – Andrew Brennan (Walcha). Whilst Andrew is fast approaching the end of his “Junior” golf days, his score of 1 over par 73 was good enough to hold off the rest of the field, including a member of the recently announced Queensland Junior Team for the National Junior Championships – Joel Stahlhut (Goondiwindi). Jock McPherson (Tamworth) also played well to retain his lead in the Northern Inland Order of Merit competition. The Junior Boys (14 years and under) gross event was won by Toby Cooper (Armidale). The best nett score in the Junior Boys division was recorded by Charlie Cush (Warialda) with a great score of nett 70.
Only four young ladies presented themselves for the Junior Girls event with Breanna Purse (Moree) using her local course knowledge to advantage to take home the major prise. The Junior Girls nett event was won by Annabelle Abrahamsen (Moree) with a great score of 66.
The Cadet Boys event was hotly contested and Harry Milford (Coonabarabran), with a great score of 57, took home the bickies. Other good scores were recorded by Riley Bettington (Moree) and Rhys Butler (Narrabri). In the “Modified Course” 9 hole event, five young players faced the starter and Charlie Milford (Coonabarabran) was good enough to hold off the rest of the field. Chelsea Manton (Goondiwindi) also played well.
The next event on the Northern Inland Order of Merit series is at Coonabarabran on Sunday March 13th.
