Denton & Edwards Crowned Champions

(7:00pm - Friday 4th October 2024)

South Australian Raegan Denton and Western Australian Josiah Edwards are the champions of the 2024 Jack Newton International Junior Classic.

Seventeen-year-old Denton of Royal Adelaide Golf Club shot a four under par round of 69 at Cypress Lakes Golf and Country Club today, bringing her final score to 11 under par. She took home the win by a very impressive four shots.

"I'm feeling really good. I mean, this is definitely a high in my career. I had a new PB at the start of the week as well. So that got me feeling really good for the start of the week," said Denton after her win.

"So first round, I was just trying to stay calm, and I managed to get a score that got me right at the top of the leaderboard after the first round. Second day, I was just trying to, you know, back that and stay comfortable. I managed to do that with a nice two under. Third day, I struggled a little bit, fell back into second place, but I was still super positive and super excited for today. And today I was just trying to chip away at the few shots that I was behind, and I managed to stay calm and keep composed and just make those few birdies that I needed to."

When asked what helped her secure the win, Denton said, "I think it was just my consistency. And I wasn't getting into too much trouble. And I knew that eventually putts would start to drop and things would start to work out."

She also reflected on her expectations for the week.

"It's definitely what I hoped would happen. But it's been a great week, and this is my last year playing, so I'm really glad that I could finally take home the win."

Coming in second, despite starting the day in the lead, was Avondale’s Rachel Lee, who finished with a final score of seven under par after shooting a plus-three round of 76 today.

Third place went to New Zealander Juwon Kim, who finished with a final score of four under par.

In the boys' division, 17-year-old Josiah Edwards of Gosnells Golf Club shot a spectacular six under par 66 today, bringing his final score to nine under par and securing the win by two shots.

"It's feeling pretty good. Last year didn't play too well. This was my last year, so all I wanted to do was win. It feels amazing. Best feeling right now. Don't know how to explain it," Edwards said after his victory.

"I was expecting to win, and I won, so I was pretty happy with it," he added.

When asked what key factors helped him win, Edwards said, "Just placing the ball in the right spots off the tee, that helped me the most which was good. It was all pretty solid, except for the third round, struggled a bit on the greens, but today, especially, I just didn't make many mistakes. I just played safe and aggressive at the same time, and putts dropped when they needed to drop."

As for where this win stands in his career, Edwards said, "Definitely at the top right now. Might just go chill in the pool. That's about it."

He added that the victory is a major confidence boost heading into the WA Open.

Queenslander Alfie Ward and New Zealander Ryan Xie shared second place in the boys' division, both finishing with a final score of seven under par.

Over at The Vintage, Toukley's Blake Cranston and Victorian Feiyu Xing claimed the 2024 Jack Newton International Sub Classic titles.

Cranston shot a brilliant six under par 66, winning by a remarkable eight-shot margin with a final score of +6. Xing also finished with a score of +6, taking the win by six shots.

The final round of the 2024 Jack Newton International Junior Classic showcased some thrilling performances, with Denton and Edwards emerging as deserving champions.

Lee Leads the Pack Into Final Round

(6:30pm - Thursday 3rd October 2024)

Blues star Rachel Lee heads into the final round of the Jack Newton International in the top spot after a stellar third round at Cypress Lakes. The 17-year-old shot an impressive four-under-par 69 today, pushing her total to ten under, three strokes ahead of the field.

Reflecting on her round, Lee shared, “Front nine, I was struggling a little bit with not a helpful hole, but then I had a lot of birdies today. A lot of putts went in, surprisingly. So that helped me keep going, and I was just trying to stay in the game. Yeah, it's good.”

As the pressure mounted on the back nine, Lee remained composed.

“For me, today it was a little harder, like coming down the stretch. But then I think just having those putts going just made myself more confident.”

Playing alongside some of the tournament’s top competitors, Lee admitted to feeling the pressure but also enjoyed the experience of meeting new players.

“It feels intense, but I got to meet a new player Ava (Cepeda from Hawaii), which was nice. Meeting new people, it's always different.”

Despite a commanding lead, Lee acknowledged the nerves ahead of the final round.

“Very nervous, but I'm also very excited to see what I could do tomorrow. Think if I just do it like I did today, I think I'll be good.”

South Australian Raegan Denton, who had led for the first two rounds, faced challenges today, shooting a two-over-par 74. Denton now sits three shots behind Lee at seven under par.

Concord’s Sahara Hillman-Varma and New Zealander Juwon Kim are tied for third in the girls' division, both with three-under-par totals.

In the boys' division, New Zealand's Ryan Xie moved to the top after shooting a one-under-par 71. His consistent play brings him to a total of seven under par, just one shot ahead of second-placed South Australian Joshua Grundel.

“It was a bit of a roller coaster to start with, under then over then back to under. I’m glad it’s over, on to the next day,” said Xie.

“Ball striking was quite good. Didn't make as many putts but I hung in there.”

With the final round looming, Xie is confident.

“I’m feeling good, feeling confident. Just get home, get some rest, and be out there tomorrow. Of course, a win would mean a lot, obviously. A lot of history in this tournament, it would be great to be part of that.”

Three players are tied for third in the boys’ division at four under par: The Australian’s Toby Farrar, Queensland’s Dujuan Synman, and New Zealand’s Ishaan Shah.

At The Vintage, the Sub-Classic continues to heat up. Victorian Feiyu Xing leads the girls’ division at +7, followed closely by Killara’s Sophie Tong at +8. Queensland’s Alicia Ludi is in third at +11.

In the boys’ division, Victorian Anton Kovacevic leads at +8, while Toukley’s Blake Cranston is second at +11. Queanbeyan’s Sebastian French and Queenslander Oliver Duffy share third at +13.

Denton and WA Duo Lead After Round Two

(6:30pm - Wednesday 2nd October 2024)

South Australian Reagan Denton continues to blaze a trail in the girls' division, while Western Australia's dynamic duo, Nate Johnson and Josiah Edwards, have claimed the lead for the boys following round two of the Jack Newton International.

Competing under pristine conditions at Cypress Lakes, Edwards posted a four-under-par 68, while Johnson followed close behind with a three-under-par 69. Their combined efforts have propelled both to the top of the leaderboard, each holding a seven-under-par total.

Reflecting on his performance, Nate Johnson explained his mindset from the start, saying, “Yesterday I just had a free mindset going to the round, I didn’t have too much expectation. Just play my own game, don’t get mad at myself and just move on. And it worked out.”

Johnson credited his strong play from tee to green, though he admitted his putting required adjustment.

“Everything was working for me today, off the tee and into greens was good. Putting I struggled, had a couple of three putts, but brought it back when I switched over. Had three birdies, not many bogeys so it worked out.”

He also acknowledged how much he's grown since last year's tournament.

“The course is good. It’s different to last year. Obviously, my golf is a lot better than last year, but yeah, I’ve learned a lot. Greens are better than the practice round.”

“I wasn’t in the team this year, so I just wanted to, you know, do my own thing, come in, put my name out there and it’s working.”

With two rounds left to play, Johnson is sticking to his successful formula.

“My game plan is to do the same, just have a free mindset, not get angry at myself and it should work out.”

Tied for third in the boys' division are Concord’s Ti Fox and New Zealand’s Ryan Xie, both sitting at four under par, three strokes behind the leaders.

In the girls’ division, Reagan Denton once again proved her class, firing a two-under-par 71 to extend her lead to nine under par for the tournament. She now holds a three-shot advantage over Avondale’s Rachel Lee, who also shot 71, to sit at six under overall.

Rachel remains confident despite the gap. The 17-year-old shared her thoughts after the round, saying, “I’m feeling pretty good. I just need to make more birdies tomorrow.”

She was pleased with her ball-striking but noted room for improvement on the greens.

“I feel like my iron shots and my tee shots are helping me a bit out there, but the greens are a little bumpy, but they’re getting better.”

Lee is staying focused for the days ahead.

“I’m pretty confident. I’m three shots behind, but there are still two or more days to go. I just have to keep consistent and just keep shooting par, just stay focused.”

Knowing this is her last chance to compete in the event adds extra motivation.

“This is one of my favourite tournaments, so I really enjoy it out here. And I won’t be playing next year, unfortunately, because I’ll be too old, so I think it would be amazing if I could win. It would definitely be in the memories.”

Hawaii’s Ava Capeda is in third place at four under par, still within striking distance heading into the final two rounds.

Meanwhile, over at The Vintage in the Sub-Classic, Victorian Feiyu Xing leads the girls’ division at +4, with Castle Hill’s Jordyn Deen in second at +7, and Killara’s Sophie Tong and Queenslander Alicia Ludi tied for third at +9.

In the boys' division, Queensland’s Oliver Duffy leads at +5, followed by Victorian Anton Kovacevic on +6, and Cronulla’s Reid Springett in third at +8.

The action continued in the 12 and Under Classic and the 9 Hole Classic at Rydges today, with the final round for the Rydges event being played tomorrow.

Denton, Fox, and Dornan Dominate the Opening Round

(6:00pm - Tuesday 1st October 2024)

South Australia's Reagan Denton is leading the charge for the girls after an incredible first round at the Jack Newton International, while Concord’s Ti Fox and Bali's Jayawardana Dornan are setting the pace for the boys.

The trio took to Cypress Lakes Golf and Country Club under ideal conditions today, where Denton shot an impressive seven-under-par 66, and Fox and Dornan both finished with five-under 67s.

Ti Fox, reflecting on his stellar round, shared, “I just didn't really make many mistakes. Hit many fairways and many greens. Didn't really give myself too many long putts, and that definitely helped. Took my chances on par fives and the par fours.”

Fox seemed to find his groove early, praising the course’s immaculate setup.

“It was beautiful. Played in the morning. So the greens are freshly cut and rolled, so rolling pure as usual,” he said.

His irons and wedges worked like magic, as he added, “My irons and wedges were working well for me today. Definitely didn't miss too much with them. If I did, it wasn't much, I'd still hit the greens.”

Known for being a slow starter, Fox was thrilled with his performance.

“I normally don't get off to a really good start. And normally, I'm chasing after the first round. So happy where I am. Just keep doing what I'm doing.”

Meanwhile, Jayawardana Dornan, the 15-year-old talent from Bali, wasn’t expecting to go low but was pleased with his play.

“Yeah, it was a good round. I wasn't really expecting to play pretty low, but yeah, no expectations. And I just, you know, played every shot, and it just ended up pretty good,” Dornan said, highlighting the importance of staying present on the course.

Dornan found the greens especially favourable today.

“The greens were really receptive, so soft as well. So it was playing spinner, so just throwing it past the pin and letting it spin back. So different conditions from what I usually play. But yeah, the course is in good condition,” he explained.

Though Dornan didn’t enter the tournament expecting to shoot a low score, he acknowledged the hard work behind it.

“I didn’t really expect to have a good score, but I know I've put enough work into it, so not really surprised, but definitely satisfied with the score.”

Dornan has fond memories of this tournament, having played in the 14 and under division last year.

“I played this tournament last year at the Rydges course with the 14 and unders and did pretty good. So let's see what happens,” he said.

As for the atmosphere, Dornan is a fan.

“I love it. I love the setup. It's really simple. It's not overdone. And that's the type of stuff I love from a tournament. And, yeah, just love coming back to this tournament. I'll probably come back in the future and try to perform similar.”

In the girls' division, Avondale’s Rachel Lee trails Denton in second after shooting a solid four-under, while Hawaii’s Kate Nakaoka is also in the mix in third on three under.

For the boys, Western Australia’s Nate Johnson, New Zealand’s Ryan Xie, and Victoria’s Elbert Kim are tied for third at four under par.

Meanwhile, over at The Vintage, the Sub-Classic is shaping up to be just as competitive. Queensland’s Janie Carroll, Victoria’s Feiyu Xing, and the ACT’s Sophia Chau share the lead in the girls' division at +3. The boys' division is currently led by Victorian Anton Kovacevic, sitting at an even score.

The action wasn't limited to Cypress Lakes and The Vintage, as the Under 12 Junior Classic and the 9 Hole Classic were also contested at Rydges today. Here’s a look at the performances from all three venues.

Last Hurrah for Hammett at Jack Newton International

(3:30pm - Monday 30th September 2024)

Will this week’s Jack Newton International be a farewell victory lap for Sarah Hammett?

The 17-year-old Queensland gun is one of the standout players in the field and returns as the defending girl’s champion at this showcase event on the national junior golf calendar.

This year’s edition of the Jack Newton International is set to make history as Australia’s biggest junior golf tournament.

Featuring 511 participants (357 boys and 154 girls) the four-day tournament promises plenty of action and will be spread across three venues, Cypress Lakes Golf & Country Club, Hunter Valley Golf Club, and The Vintage Golf Club.

It is also the largest ‘International’ field ever assembled. Players from 16 nations are competing with Australia leading the charge. Teams from the USA, China New Zealand and the French Pacific enclave of New Caledonia are also taking part, making it a truly global affair.

Hammett, the 2022 NSW Amateur Champion however, is shaping up as the player they all want to beat.

Full of focus, She reflected on the thrill of returning to the event as the defending champion.

“I travelled down with the team yesterday, and that’s always a good vibe on the bus. I’m really excited to be back here and try to defend my title,” she said.

“I’ve played this event since I was like 12, and coming down here every year, it’s just so special.”

And as her last junior tournament, she’s determined to make it count.

“I would like to win with it being my last junior tournament. To end on a high would be really good. I’m super excited to get out there tomorrow and play,” she shared.

Though the pressure of defending a title can weigh heavily, Hammett remains upbeat.

“My game hasn’t been looking too bad. I played last week at the Katherine Kirk Classic and unfortunately lost on a playoff hole. But yeah, otherwise, pretty happy with where my game’s at.”

While the stakes are high, she also knows the importance of enjoying the moment.

“I think I’m just going to go out there, have fun, try and make as many birdies as possible, and just see how I go. The main goal is just to have fun, especially it being my last tournament.”

As the 2024 Jack Newton International gets underway, all eyes will be on Sarah Hammett as she aims to defend her title and finish her junior career on a high note.

The tournament will tee off at 6:15 AM tomorrow morning.
