Guan Cruises to Victory as Playoff Decides Girls
(6:00pm - Friday 22nd January 2021)
Defending Champion Jeffrey Guan (The Australian) has cruised to victory in the 2021 Harvey Norman Sydney Week of Golf, winning by an incredible 16 shots.
From Wednesday onwards, there was only ever going to be one winner in the Boys Division. After opening with rounds of 72 - 71 which put him on top of a packed leaderboard, Guan exploded with rounds of 66, 64 and a final round 65 at Muirfield to blow away his rivals for back-to-back titles. The Australian Golf Club team mate Josh Todd recovered brilliantly from a slow start, coming home with rounds of 65 - 64 to finish in second place, the only other player to break par.
Brodie Herring (Manly) and Chun-Ta Wu (Long Reef) shared third place a further six shots back at five over par, with Wu winning the Playoff between the two boys with a birdie on the 1st extra hole. The 12/13 Years Division looked set for a playoff before Toby Farrar (Lynwood) rolled in a long curling birdie putt on the 90th Hole to defeat Bo Chung (Ryde Parramatta) by one shot. Charlie Peng (Avondale) won the Boys 11 Years and Under Division in his final JNJG Major before turning 12.

The Girls Division was very different to the Boys, with extra holes needed to separate Brielle Mapanao (The Australian) and Rachel Lee (North Ryde). After a number of players took turns at taking the lead over the marathon five day event, it was Mapanao and Lee who took control late on Friday. After starting the final round with a seven shot lead, Lee was steady throughout the final round, issuing a challenge to the chasing pack to come and get her. Mapanao did just that, with an incredible final round.
The NSW State Team player fired a final round of 67 (-5), taking the challenge to the improved young gun to actually hit the lead with her fifth birdie of the day on the 14th. The girls matched birdies on the 16th, with Mapanao standing on the 18th Tee, the 90th Hole of the week, with a one shot lead. As her birdie putt slid agonisingly over the edge, the door was left ajar for Lee to force sudden-death which she did with a clutch birdie of her own.
After three extra holes, it was 13 year old Lee who claimed her first major JNJG with victory on the 93rd Hole of the week! Mapanao claimed the Girls 15 Years and Over Division, whilst Camilla Kim (Lynwood) ensured she is a name to watch in the future with a dominant 51 shot victory in the Girls 11 Years and Under Division.

Guan Hits Boys for Six as Girls Leaderboard is Stacked
(7:30pm - Wednesday 20th January 2021)
On a day where the fun on the golf course was almost overshadowed by Aqua Golf and Fishing in the dam on the 18th at Brighton Lakes, Jeffrey Guan (The Australian) put his foot down to take total control of the Harvey Norman Sydney Week of Golf.
Whilst Guan was extending his lead to six shots in the Boys Division, the Girls Division was the complete opposite, with an incredible four players separated by just one shot with 36 Holes to play. Nara Shin (Lynwood) and Brielle Mapanao (The Australian) have taken a share of the lead, with the Top 10 Players within four shots of the lead.
In a fun addition to break up the long tournament week, players finished their round before taking part in a 50m Aqua-Golf pitching competition, whilst also getting the opportunity to throw a line in and catch some fish in the damn next to the 18th green. It was a great initiative and we'd like to make special mention to Kurt Stegbauer and his team at Brighton Lakes for thinking outside the box!

2021 Harvey Norman Sydney Week of Golf
(8:00am - Thursday 14th January 2021)
The 2021 Harvey Norman Sydney Week of Golf will take place next week, with almost 200 players taking part in the five-day, 90-Hole Tournament.
Players will compete in the marathon event that takes place over five different courses throughout Sydney and is the longest junior tournament in the country.
The opening round will take place at Twin Creeks Golf and Country Club on Monday, before the tournament moves to Liverpool Golf Club (Tuesday), Brighton Lakes Recreation and Golf Club (Wednesday), Strathfield Golf Club (Thursday), before finishing at it's regular home and the course our very own Jack Newton grew up playing, Muirfield Golf Club (Friday).
Whilst Twin Creeks and Muirfield were on the schedule in 2020, the middle three venues will host a major JNJG tournament for the first time in more than 15 years, with it also being the first junior tournament played on the new and improved Brighton Lakes and Strathfield layouts.
With Greater Sydney still declared a hotspot, no interstate players will take part in the tournament this year, limiting the numbers to those from NSW only.
