ACT MONARO JUNIOR WEEK OF GOLF

The ACT School holidays were full of golfing opportunities for our young up and coming golfers.  The ACT Monaro Junior Week of Golf is an annual event run in both the July and October schools holidays.  There is also a one-day junior event in January.  The 2014 January Junior and Colts Classic will be held on January 17th at Fairbairn Golf Club.

The October Junior Week of Golf saw almost 50 juniors compete for some very generous prizes.  Golfers played the three-day event (54 holes) at Capital Golf Club, Murrumbidgee Golf Club and Queanbeyan Golf Club.  At times the weather conditions were testing with wind, rain and at Murrumbidgee the golfers were hailed upon twice during their round.  Amazingly this did not dampen their spirits or cause major problems for their scores.

The competition included a sub-junior event for those children who do not yet have handicaps.  There were three brave youngsters, Elissa Youill, Riley Wilcox, and Mareli Steenkamp who participated in the sub-junior event.  Elissa is a member of the Girls in Golf program at Federal Golf Club.  Riley enjoys his golf at Belconnen Golf Club with JPO Paul Thorne, and Mareli is a keen participant in Royal Canberra Golf Club’s junior program.  Congratulations to those budding golfers and thank you to their parents and grandparents for caddying and supporting them.  They will soon be getting their handicaps.
